Book Notes

A book note is a trail back to a thought. It can be brief, but it should be clear enough that the idea is easy to find again.

Leave a trail

The best notes are useful to the future reader, not impressive to the present one. A few plain sentences — what the book was about, what stayed, where it might be useful — will outlast a clever paragraph written to be admired.

When a note is honest about why a book mattered, it keeps mattering. That is the whole point of writing it down.

Keep a stack in motion

A reading stack can hold a finished book, an open book, and a reference book at once. That small movement keeps reading active without making it frantic, and the notebook simply records what changed from one week to the next.

Some books leave a page of notes; some leave a single line. Both are worth keeping, and the stack makes room for either.
